![]() DHLAMINI WETLAND PARK / As a result of the Klipspruit Open Space Framework, originally compiled by NLA and Oryx in 1999, Johannesburg City Parks requested that NLA relook at the Klipspruit area from a strategic point of view in 2007. Utilising the original drawings, a motivation was put together for additiional funding for Open Space Development along the Klipspruit in order to “complete” the landscape development of this critical corridor. In 2008 NLA, together with Karien Hanekom Landscape Architects, was appointed to execute master planning for the Klipspruit, guided by NLA’s updated framework. The Dhlamini section is a key link between the Thokosa Moroka Dam Precinct and the Kliptown Precinct This three kilometre linear Park is the key that links these important social facilities. NLA opted to “string” together a number of facilities, introducing the concept of linking little bubbles along the narrow corridor between 40 and 100 metres. Complicating factors to be taken into account, were the flood line on the northern side of the Park and the additional Rand Water servitude on the southern side of the Park. This project is earmarked for implementation in the second half of 2009, Countryline Africa having been appointed as contractor. In December 2011 the last phase was completed as part of an extreme park makeover - and the park was renamed to Petrus Molefe Eco Park that is not just a recreational space; but also a memorial where the younger generation can learn about the price paid and sacrifices made for freedom. |
