PETER MOKABA STADIUM POLOKWANE
In anticipation for the 2010 FIFA Soccer World Cup, a new 45,000 seat capacity World Class African Sports Stadium Complex is being constructed in Polokwane. The prestigious Peter Mokaba Stadium is the first of its kind in the entire Limpopo province. In future, it will become home to local soccer teams, as well as facilitate a wide range of South African Sport Competitions.
The landscape design considers the rich vegetation surrounding the stadium, introducing only plant species considered to be indigenous to the area – including Acacia’s and various colourful Aloespecies. To brighten the mood of all participants and supporters, a dramatic hard landscape makes use of a range of colourful pavers - give a hint of the rainbow nation of South Africa!
The soccer pitch was successfully designed to fully comply with the FIFA specifications, while taking into account budget limitations and future maintenance constraints. Here, an automated irrigation system with dedicated pump station and variable speed drive was designed to pump irrigation water from an underground storage tank, ensuring a constant water supply, topped up by excess run-off water from the pitch drainage system.
